About AFRI
Afri (Action from Ireland)
What is Afri?
Afri is a group of committed and creative people who seek to promote debate and influence policy and practice in Ireland and internationally on human rights, peace and justice issues. Afri, in particular, responds to injustice in the world caused by war and other violent conflict.
Afri exists to promote the vision of, and strive to bring into being, a more just, more equal and more peaceful world through research, debate, awareness raising and action in partnership with marginalised people affected by, or engaged with, issues of equity and security, especially in the global ‘South’.
Organisational structure
Afri is a company limited by Guarantee with charitable status. Afri has a seven member executive committee who meet on a monthly basis to review current projects and agree future work programmes. Afri has a full time Co-ordinator and a part time administrator based at the office in Phibsborough. Afri also contracts staff for Development Education and Research Projects.
Organisational Goal
There are many causes of current injustice and conflicts – including the current model of economic globalisation, with its attendant features including unequal trade and debilitating international debt repayments, and militarisation. Afri’s organisational goal is the promotion of global justice and peace, and the reduction of poverty; this includes, but is not limited to, the progressive reduction of global militarisation.
Strategic Objective
The question of how this organisational goal may be achieved is obviously a complicated one. Issues of how the policies of the ‘great powers’ might be altered and of how global institutions might be reformed arise. As Irish citizens and as members of Irish civil society, Afri believes that our primary responsibility and our chief opportunity for action lie with matters Irish, not least ensuring the inclusion of a Southern perspective in Irish discourse. This refers to how the policies of the Irish state and activities taking place within the Irish economy impact on the people of the global South. Ensuring that Ireland contributes to the promotion of global justice and peace, the reduction of global poverty, and the progressive reduction of global militarisation, is Afri’s strategic objective.
